Lunchpac

University Live Eco Product Design Concept Assignment for
Marks and Spencers

The initial concept sketches for how this could be done showed the functional form could be a compartmentalised rectangular shoulder bag that would rest at hip level, thus comfortable for reaching by hand.

A biodegradable or recyclable rip stop nylon would be ideal as strong, thin and light as well as waterproof.

It would not absorb foods or liquids and be easy to clean.

This could incorporate a collapsible tent pole like rod could be used to give the bag structure holding the compartments open then be easily pulled out and folded when packed or rolled, tied up with Velcro straps.

Brief

This was a live university assignment for client Marks and Spencers for an environmentally beneficial cheap checkout product.

We were briefed to come up with a product concept that could then go on to become an actual product.

Issues and Problems Driving Inspiration

  • The inspiration came from the number of times I had been running late in the morning or on a very short lunch break and needing to eat on the go.

  • Eating from a bag or items in your hand would be a lot easier if there was a way to hold your food, packets or pudding pots open with no problem of anything tipping over, in your bad or over your clothes.

  • One of the big environmental issues is the number of single use plastic bags.

Product Design Specifications

The product needs to be:

  • Be profitable under £2.50.

  • Small enough to fit on a cashpoint till.

  • Reusable thus durable.

  • Be biodegradable either on its own or if sprayed with another material or recyclable.

  • Cleanable and hygienic.

  • Has to be light and foldable to fit in a pocket, so there is no problem with carrying it.

  • Has to open into compartments that can hold typical light lunch items and packaging open and upright.

  • Has to be hands free and easy to access whilst walking.

The compartments need to be able to hold open food items and packaging without it falling over including:

  • Triangular sandwich packet, sub role or wrap.

  • Round fruit such as an apple.

  • Bananas.

  • Pots of yogurt or similar desert.

  • Small to medium rectangular lunch box such as a sushi, rice or pasta dish.

  • 500ml drink bottle or can.

  • Packet of crisps.

  • Cutlery.

Concept

It is from here that the intial concept was developed as shown above.

A compartmentalised rectangular shoulder bag that would rest at hip level, thus comfortable for reaching by hand that would make eatiing on the go car easier then messing around constantly on a bag trying to find and fish items out of have them spill in the bad, along side problems packing and unpacking when getting to a train station or bus stop or leaving food behind when leaving the transport in a hurry.

Open pots of desert or bottles would also n.t be a problem being kept upright along with cutlery could be safetly held as being used.

A biodegradable or recyclable rip stop nylon would be ideal as strong, thin and light as well as waterproof. It would not absorb foods or liquids and be easy to clean.
This could incorporate a collapsible tent pole like rod could be used to give the bag structure holding the compartments open then be easily pulled out and folded when packed or rolled, tied with Velcro straps.
